The Official Launch of

Mr Roderick D Fraser
Principal Ivanhoe Grammar School

Welcome to the Ivanhoe Grammar School Cyber Safety site. This website is a fine resource for parents and I express my sincere thanks to Dr Michael Carr-Gregg for his willingness to scrutinize the contents of the site and proffer his insightful comments. His subsequent endorsement is a great source of pride to the School.

Our School is focussed on educating the whole student in and beyond the classroom so they can successfully live and work in the 21st Century. An essential communication tool for us all is the electronic medium. In particular social networking via electronic means has become an integral part of many people’s interactions with others, especially amongst younger age groups. This is predicted to increase as the means of human interaction in the future. It is important that our Students are aware of how to responsibly utilise all the benefits that modern technology can offer, both now and in the rapidly changing future.

This website and the resources it provides for all – Parents and Students – is designed to support the development of cyber safe actions and attitudes. I gratefully acknowledge the support of Ivanhoe Parents, who participated in several discussions sessions at each of our Campuses. Our aim has been to put appropriate information on the site to assist in ensuring that our children are safe online and also to provide a place of reference for Parents and other adult community members. We hope and anticipate that this resource will be used by other communities like ours wishing to develop a similar approach.

Thank you, we very much appreciate the feedback. You have summarised so well our view of the responsibility of all adults in relation to where their children roam on the internet. Better to roam with them! I love your image of the ‘virtual front door’!

  2. This a fantastic site – well done. It’s really important that parents get their heads around social media and learn how to use it themselves. Most parents believe it’s important they monitor their kids when they leave the front door, but kids can leave the virtual front door every time they sit behind their laptop. So you need to have an idea of where they go, what they do and say and who they’re with “out there”. The only way to do this is to get informed and participate yourself. I’ve heard parents say “Oh I don’t like Facebook, and I’m never going to join”. You need to join, insist you are a friend of your kids (and not blocked), and quietly monitor their activities as best you can. This site really helps with this process and congratulations should go to the School and Dr Carr-Gregg.
