I had to ask myself several times if I should post this but in the end I decided to do so because it likely that:
a) you will not have heard of it,
b) that your teens are fascinated by it and
c) that your filter will probably not automatically block this site.
When you learn about it you will want to keep your children away. Please don’t look at it yourself – just trust me and add the following to your block list: ChatRoulette.com and ChatRT.com.
This is a new site and it is catching on very quickly. It started with 300 users in December 2009 and grew to 10,000 in February of 2010. The site allows you to connect randomly via a webcam on your computer to a webcam on another computer to another individual who happens to be using the site at the same time. If you don’t like who you are chatting with, you click “next” and are randomly connected to another person.
Although the terms of use state that certain inappropriate content is not allowed, there is no way to actually control what people display on their webcam.
You do not want your children accessing this site. If you have a content filter installed, add this to your block list. If you don’t, now would be a great time to install one – check out our section on filters.
